Last weekend, nine MHS students competed in the State Drama, Debate and Forensics Tournament in Anchorage! Our students competed very hard against nearly 200 students from all around Alaska, and managed to make both local and state history through their efforts!
Our DDF team was awarded the State Sportsmanship award for the kindness, support, and generosity that our students show to one another and other teams.
Matthew M. broke through to semifinals in Informative Speaking, the first Metlakatla High School student in history to do so!
Evyn V. finaled in Dramatic Interpretation, scoring 5th place overall. Evyn is only the second Metlakatla High School student in history to final in this event. Evyn is ALSO the 1st Alternate for Nationals in Dramatic Interpretation! This means that if the actual qualifier declines the invitation to nationals, Evyn will be eligible to travel and compete!
The DDF Coaches' Association chose Elizabeth A. and Salafa S. as co-Students of the Year, the highest honor that can be conferred to a student in this activity. Elizabeth A. is the first student from Metlakatla High School to ever be given this award.
The state tournament was a strong finish to a great season. Thank you to our students parents and families, our teachers and administrators, volunteers and community members, and every other person who contributed to these students' success. We look forward to another great season next year!
