Metlakatla High School Student Government participated in the Spring Conference of the Alaska Association of Student Governments (AASG) in Sitka last weekend. They had a wonderful time, and one of our students received an award for her excellent resolution! AASG conferences bring students from all over the state of Alaska together to discuss issues important to Alaskan students. Delegations bring "resolutions" - formal policy proposals - to the conference to be debated and voted on by all delegations at the conference. AASG conferences are entirely student-run: all of the leadership positions are filled by students, all of the resolutions are written by students, and all matters of procedure are handled by elected student leaders. Two of our students - Gabrielle S. and Reese T. - brought resolutions to the conference concerning environmental protection and health education, respectively. Both resolutions were passed by the Conference, and will now be sent to the Alaska Legislature for consideration. Additionally, Gabrielle's resolution was awarded "Resolution of the Conference" by the Executive Board! At the end of the conference, the Metlakatla High School Student Government organized a beach fire with the Student Governments of Ketchikan High School and Kotzebue High School at the Mosquito Cove campsite. On Friday, our MHS Theater Class traveled to Ketchikan to watch a matinee production of "Alice in Wonderland" put on by the First City Players! They also got to participate in a fun theater workshop with the cast where they learned and played some theater games and worked on developing their improvisation skills.
