students and staff on large fishing boat

On April 28th, the RJES kindergarten through fifth grade students boarded the Aleutian Ballad for a two-hour trip learning about crabbing, and what it's like to work on a boat!

The students got the opportunity to hold different kinds of crabs, shrimp, starfish, and more, and wrote a dream on tags that will be affixed to a crab pot used on the Aleutian Ballad.

We were also joined by MIC Mayor Albert Smith and Councilman Gyibaawm Laxha (David R. Boxley) who spoke about Metlakatla's history, the return of Annette Island Packing, the success of our salmon hatchery, and all the amazing opportunities being created for our community.

A huge thank you to MIC and to the crew of the Aleutian Ballad for making this trip happen for our students- we had a blast!
