This Halloween, keep an eye out for children carrying blue buckets! These buckets may signify children with autism. Help to create a more inclusive and understanding environment for all trick-or-treaters. Also, some of our non-verbal friends have been practicing to use their PECs (Picture Exchange Communication System) cards on Halloween night.  Let's make Halloween a fun and safe experience for everyone! To kick of Native American Heritage Month, Sealaska Heritage Institute has sponsored a Cedar Rose Family Night with artist Ms. Naomi Leask! Annette Island School District and The Watchmen Logo Committee are thrilled to announce the winner of our Logo Contest: Holtka Xsoo (Clifton Guthrie)! It was a difficult decision due to all the fantastic art that was submitted. We are grateful to all of the artists who sent their designs. Here is the story behind Clifton's beautiful artwork, "Raising Watchmen" "This design is a representation of Father/ Uncle figures helping a young person out of a dark place. The idea to help, or be there for someone is delivered in many ways here, like fishing, hunting, basketball, culture, visiting, etc. These activities open up greater conversations and lead to helping words, or confidence through these activities. I’ve been each person in this representation, and I'm grateful for this support cycle we have ingrained in our root system here in Metlakatla. I was reluctant to share this design because unfortunately, it feels all too personal. I thought deeper about my relationships, where they came from, and how impactful they were for me. While sketching it, I reflected on having people like my uncle, coach, and others in my life who represent these types of figures. I’m sure everyone here has their own stories that can relate. I hope this design will help surface those memories, as a reminder to keep this cycle going for the next generation to pass on. This process is why our “Root System” is so strong here in Metlakatla, Alaska."
