Congratulations to the first winner of the Department of Student Services Golden Apple Award of Excellence: Jody Caspersen! The nominator said, "Jody often deals with students who have made unfortunate behavior choices, students who are late and need a place to eat breakfast, students who are injured or sick and need a bandaid and some comfort. She does so on top of her regular office duties and does so with much grace, patience and compassion. She deserves recognition for her dedication." Each month the Department of Student Services seeks to recognize and honor outstanding staff members who display EXCELLENCE in working to ensure students with disabilities have the opportunity for an inclusive education with their peers as part of the general education curriculum and school community. AISD staff can nominate another staff member, and each month, a winner is randomly selected from the nominees! Dear Metlakatla Community, It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the new Director of Student Services for Annette Island School District. I am honored to have been invited to join a great school community and to lead a talented department devoted to serving students and their families. Since my start in mid August, I’ve met and spoken with administrators, principals, program supervisors, faculty, staff, our community partners, and parents. There was a resounding theme repeated in those conversations; decisions are based on what is in the best interest of students. In just a few short weeks, I’ve learned the systems and structures in place to support students and their families, as well as considered faculty and staff suggestions and wishes for strengthening our practices and processes. In upcoming weeks and months, I look forward to continuing these conversations, listening and learning more, and through close collaboration with colleagues and with you it is my goal to prioritize areas of focus as we strengthen cultural awareness, teaching and learning, and provide excellent services that shatter barriers to students achieving their maximum potential. Excellence is the standard is my personal motto and mindset as we begin this new school year. Our team is excited to serve the students and families with disabilities in the spirit of excellence. I assure you that you could not be in a better school district than Annette Island School District, a place that is filled with people who truly care. The staff members who work in AISD and in the Student Services Department are here because they have a passion and purpose to serve children and give back to the community. It is our goal to partner with you to ensure we are enriching, educating, and inspiring the lives of the students in our district. Please know that you are supported and there will be opportunities for you to access resources here at the district and in the community during this school year. If you have questions and/or concerns you are always welcomed to visit our Student Services Center located in the Annex Building behind the high school. I am committed to the present and future of the collective goals of our strategic plan and breaking all barriers in doing so that may arise as the year progresses.
