Annette Island School District

Metlakatla High School will be hosting the first regional DDF meet on September 13th and 14th, and we need volunteer judges! Students from six teams across Southeast Alaska will be arriving in our community to compete, and we'll need a LOT of judges to help out. Whether you've done it before or don't even know what DDF is (it's Drama, Debate, and Forensics), we would love to have you! Metlakatla Families, It is hard for me to believe that I am starting my fourteenth year with the Annette Island School District. This will, however, be my first year as the RJ Elementary Principal and I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve the community in this new and exciting way. Metlakatla shined bright this summer, and I hope that everyone was able to engage in some of the amazing activities this beautiful island has to offer. As we make the transition into the new school year, I would like to emphasize my commitment to this community and your children. Communication between home and school is vital, and while social media plays a role in our technology-driven lives, it should never serve as a substitute for a phone call or face-to-face contact. My number one job is to be here for you and I look forward to supporting you as your child grows and thrives at RJ Elementary. Building a strong community starts with the children, and I am truly honored to be a part of their lives. We will be sending out more information as the week progresses. Annette Island School District was deeply saddened to learn of the landslide that took place yesterday in Ketchikan, and the impact it has had on so many of our families, friends, and neighbors. Our school districts and cities are closely woven together, and the devastation it has caused to our neighboring community is truly heartbreaking. AISD recently hosted a week-long Summer Art Institute! These institutes are sponsored by the Alaska Arts Consortium every year in various locations around the state. This year, we were fortunate to have 18 participants who spent the week engaged in learning about how the arts can promote social-emotional learning.
